In Year 6, as part of our 'A Child's War' topic, we have been designing and creating these stunning dioramas depicting Anderson Shelters. It's a great little project where our children have studied images of Anderson shelters to determine what they were made from and how they were constructed before selecting a range of materials to construct a structurally sound miniature Anderson shelter. It's a very fun activity which covers some excellent design and technology learning goals - for example, the children have been finding out that strength can be added to a framework by using multiple layers, that corrugated cardboard can be placed with corrugations running alternately vertically and horizontally, that triangular shapes can be used instead of square shapes because they are more rigid and that frameworks can be further strengthened by adding an outer cover....phew! Lots of learning going on in the most creative, engaging way - that's what Sulby School is all about!
