Spring 1:
What a roarsome half term we have spent, learning about terrific and terrifying dinosaurs! Our role play area has been transformed into a Dinosaur Museum, complete with skeletons, dinosaur exhibits, fossil finding and a reference library! We have been learning to write factual information and have enjoyed sharing a series of books based on Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs. In Maths, we have been making and continuing patterns, measuring length and height, as well as developing our handling of numbers to 20. Our PE lessons have been very adventurous, as we have been developing our climbing and balancing skills using the large apparatus. You can imagine how thrilling this was for them all!
A few weeks ago, we had a visit from PC Jenette who spoke to us about what to do if we get lost - a very important life lesson. Recently, we had a fantastic trip to the Manx Museum in Douglas, where the children were given opportunities to examine real fossils and rocks and observe the massive skeletons of a Great Stag Deer and Sei Whale there. The museum staff were so welcoming and helpful and the children were a credit to us all! Well done, Year 1, you made us all proud.

Autumn 2:
Year 1 have had great fun developing our literacy skills through our theme of Traditional Tales during the last half term. We have retold our favourite stories, made up new versions and produced our own illustrations. You should see the lovely display in our classroom showing all our favourite characters - the Gingerbread Man, Cinderella, the Little Red Hen, the Three Little Pigs and many more! We had a super trip to the Grove Museum in Ramsey, where we learned more about homes in the past as part of our History and Geography topic. It was exciting visiting each room and comparing them to our own modern houses! Recently, we improved our pedestrian skills with the Road Safety Team, we were so pleased to be able to practise keeping ourselves safer near roads with the experts. For the last fortnight, we have had great fun with all things festive! We are so proud of our calendars and can't wait to surprise our families with all our creative gifts! We have loved using small world figures to retell the story of the Sleepy Shepherd, our Nativity play. What a special time of the year it is!
From all of us in year 1, we wish you a very happy Christmas and lots of fun adventures in 2022,
Mrs Bovenizer
In Autumn 1: Welcome to Year 1. We have had an exciting start to the year, exploring all things italian with our Italy topic. We have made some super pasta paintings of famous landmarks and have been busy serving up pizzas in our Sulby Pizzeria role play area. We had great fun in our italian tasting session - focaccia and grissini were a big favourite! Did you know the national animal of Italy is an Apennine Wolf? We had great fun producing our wolf puppets and our collage canvas. Our maths challenge has been to count, order and sort numbers up to 10 - we love developing our number skills! Recently, we read a story about a mouse called Marcello, who attended a masquerade ball in Venice. So... we made our own masks, learned a dance and performed a masquerade in our PE lesson! We can't wait to have more year 1 learning adventures with our new topic, Traditional Tales.
