Spring 1
The Vikings have invaded Y3 this term, much to the children's excitement! There is so much to cover in this topic that we could easily have spent many more weeks on it! The children have learned a lot about the daily lives of Vikings as well as their more fearsome reputation as warriors. Writing stories about a Frost Giant has dominated the writing activities and there have been fantastic opportunities for art, with each child having produced a detailed painting of a longship. Their portraits of Viking warriors are still underway but are promising to look amazing!
The children have been developing their graphic design skills on the computer, including drawing fantastic shields which involved applying a lot of skills! The children also benefited from a day's input from Mr Townsend who used to operate the Computer Bus. He taught them so (and us!) so much and Mrs Horisk has been building on this in the weekly IT lessons.
Viking Day was a real highlight with lots of hands on activities! Sue Quilliam deserves a big thank you for supporting this activity each year, including lending all her resources as well as giving up her time to teach the children. Thank you for providing the children with such great costumes - they really looked the part!!
Autumn 2
This term the children have continued to explore our planet in their "Wonderful World' topic. They have learned about hot and cold deserts and have made individual posters with photos and captions. The children have also learned all about two contrasting countries - Ethiopia and Greenland - and have discovered how much you can find out about a country just by looking at a map. They have done some fantastic art work showing firework displays behind famous world landmarks, such as The Statue of Liberty and the Sydney Opera House, which have really brightened up our classroom.
Recently our attention has largely turned towards Christmas but we have also completed our bread baking day, having learned about the different breads from around the world and how bread is a staple food for so many people. The children were given the choice of adding a wide variety of ingredients to a basic bread recipe and I was really pleased with how adventurous they all were. We then tasted each others bread, writing comments about their flavour, texture and crustiness! Again I was so pleased that all of the children were happy to try all of the breads and I have to say that all of the loaves were delicious!
Autumn 1
Welcome to Year 3!
The children have all settled in to life in KS2 very quickly and are enjoying being up in the 'biggies' end of the school!
We all thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Peru in our Discovering Languages topic and learned some amazing things about the history, wildlife and landscapes. What a fantastic country! We all fancied a class trip but unfortunately Covid restrictions did not allow us to go quite that far this year ....
In Learning to Learn week at the very start of term the children did a series of individual, paired and team challenges. It was a great day with lots of successful outcomes! We will continue to develop our Learning to Learn skills throughout the year!
